Thousands of Pilgrims Arrive at Namugongo Uganda Martyrs Shrine

With just a one day to the 3rd of June, thousands and thousands of pilgrims and tourists are arriving at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine found in Namugongo to commemorate and honor the day when the Christian martyrs of Uganda where brutally killed through burning and being beheaded by king Mwanga for their Christian Faith. This historical and religious site which is also among Uganda’s Tourist Products has become the leading site to receive the highest number of visitors at a time annually.

Who will Lead and animate the 2017 Martyrs’ Day Celebrations?

This year, Hoima Diocese is to lead and animate the celebrations of remembering the Martyrs of Uganda who were killed on 3rd June. They will also present the leading choir which will sing through the Holy mass that day. Last year, Kyinda Mityana diocese led the celebrations.

What is the THEME of the 2017 Martyrs Day Celebrations?

As earlier informed at the beginning of this year by the diocesan bishop, the theme this year will be: “Stand Firm in the Faith” (Colossian 2:7)

How Many people will be in Namugongo?

Well according to past statistics, the number of pilgrims and tourists that go to Namugongo increases each year. Last year it was estimated that there were about 1.7 million people who turned up to celebrate this historical and religious day.

This year however, it is estimated that over two (2) millions people will be at the Uganda Martyrs Shrine

Are there any measures that have been put in place to sustain this large number?

Well according to what we found on ground and the report from this year’s organizing committee, the number screens have been increase and placed in different places to enable everyone follow the processions, the public address system has been boosted as well, more toilet and bathroom facilities have been constructed across the ground, more taps have been placed in  different places to ease accessing of water, more tents have been erected and security boosted.

Is it Safe to be at Namugongo?

the Ugandan government through the Uganda Police force have confirmed to both local and international visitors coming to this places as well as the general public that the security across this  entire area has been beefed up well with several check points being established in and around this place. The Uganda police has been joined by several other security operatives including the military army, marine forces, air-forces plus several private security agencies.

When do people start going to Namugongo?

People have been arriving at Namugongo about one month before the de day of 3rd June they travel for all corners of the world.
